Newel Knight wrote extensively in a personal journal about his experiences related to the founding and early years of the of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his death in 1847, his wife edited and preserved his journal. In the 1980s it was typed up by Lucette and Robert Allen. That typescript has been updated and annotated in this 2026 version of what has been known as the Allen Version of the Newel Knight Journal,Newel relates his experiences in learning to pray, about preaching the gospel with Hyrum Smith as a companion, about the persecution faced in Missouri from 1831-1839, and the martyrdom of the prophet. He includes many letters that were written to government leaders to seek redress from depredations suffered by the Saints. He also relates leaving Nauvoo to pioneer a route west with his wife and children, and his journey to Nebraska where he died in January 1847.This version has much information not found in shorter journal versions, including Rise of the Latter-day Saints.
