Taihaku Roshi radiated clarity, joyfulness and caring. Having dedicated herself to a spiritual path from a young age, she later in life completed rigorous training at a Monastery in Japan as the only woman and the only foreigner. She designed a beautiful little temple in the mountains of Vermont, establishing a dedicated place for Buddhist practice. Taihaku Roshi embraced the formal Buddhist practices of sitting meditation, ritual, chanting, and study with such dedication that sometimes people would be surprised by the teachings she also shared through her gardening, cooking, laughing, and open-hearted connection to all beings—humans, animals, plants and rocks.Taihaku Roshi taught primarily by how she was, leaving few writings or recorded talks. This book is a lovingly compiled collection of some of those writings and examples of her artwork, combined with stories and remembrances by those who knew her, and a sprinkling of photos. It is also a collection of encouragements and guidance on how we can move from the discomfort of self-absorption to make our caring bigger. Read more
